Termites and moisture
Native subterranean termites occur in every Alabama county, according to Alabama Extension, and moisture is the key factor that draws them in. Leaky gutters, condensation, poor drainage and wood touching soil all raise the risk. An annual inspection, with a report and map you keep on file, is the simplest protection. See termite control.
Summer mosquitoes
Mosquitoes breed in any container that holds water. The Alabama Department of Public Health recommends dumping and scrubbing containers weekly, covering rain barrels and filling low spots in the yard, then using EPA-registered repellent at dawn and dusk. See mosquito control.
